The Sanskrit word Kirtan comes from the root words Keerat or Kirat. Kirtan music has become a very popular form of yoga music.
KEERAT or KIRAT: to glorify, praise, exalt, worship, devote
TAAN: a tune, rhyme, melody or musical run
TANA: the body
Kirtan: To praise Divinity through expressive song.
Kirtan involves the vocal chanting of mantras or specific writings to the accompaniment of instruments such as the harmonium, tablas, mrdangam or pakawaj drum, and hand cymbals. It is a major practice in Western Yoga Music, Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist faiths.
