Yoga Music or Kirtan in the West began in the early 1920′s, and has taken on a life of its own. Sankirtan and Bhakti yoga have been brought into Western Yoga.
Paramhansa Yogananda was one of the first Yogi’s to bring kirtan in the West, chanting Guru Nanak’s “Hey Hari Sundara” (Oh God Beautiful to over 3,000 people at Carnegie Hall in 1923.
His movement still continues as the Self Realization Foundation and its members practice Kirtan.
Kirtan and Sankirtan became more common when the Hare krishna movement started in 1960 by ISKCON’s founder A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
In the early 1970′s Yogi Bhajan started the Kundalini Yoga movement and along with this arose the Kundalini Music and the Western Sikh Music Kirtan genres.
Today Kirtan and Yoga Music in the West keeps growing in popularity and is a regular part of the Bhakti Yoga movement. Yoga music is a regular part of most Yoga studios and Yoga Conventions.
